To bring our mission to life, we are partnering with local elementary schools and summer camps. They serve as the primary venues for camp and after-school programs, reaching students where they are most comfortable and familiar.

The profound impact of my experiences as a tutor and teacher in the minority as well as middle class communities in Marin County, California, has led me to spearhead an initiative addressing the systemic issues hindering the academic success of students, especially in Hispanic and African American communities, or where schools have failed to give the one-on-one attention that some students need to reach grade level proficiency.

Drawing from my years as a Camp Director for and as a tutor in various educational settings, I discovered the effectiveness of involving high school and middle school Counselors in Training (CITs) to provide additional tutoring support.

Rather than a 20 or 30 to 1 student-to-teacher ratio, we potentially achieve something closer to 2 or 3 to 1 – a drastic improvement by providing tutors at NO COST to afterschool programs and summer camps specifically recruited and trained to provide math and reading training to PK-5th grade students!

Camp Canal’s solution is elegantly simple yet transformative. By concentrating on the crucial early years of PK to 5th grade and emphasizing essential subjects like Math and English/Language Arts, we are focusing on early years that are crucial for building the skills and knowledge that maintain and exceed grade level proficiency – key to college acceptance.

Generous donations, coupled with support from private foundations, have allowed us to eliminate the financial burden for parents and students. At Camp Canal, our primary goal is to ensure that all students who have fallen behind in grade level proficiency can use OUR after school and summer camp Counselors in Training to make up that deficiency and have a better chance at acceptance to college. And the Certified training and experience that CITs get from our program is invaluable to helping them succeed in college and future employment.
